MCA Approved (STCW ISPS) Proficiency in Designated Security Duties Course

Training in Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) must be undertaken by all seafarers and security personnel who are engaged onboard ship, who have been assigned designated duties under the Ship’s Security Plan (SSP).

About the Online PDSD Course:

This fully online course provides the relevant training to those who have been entrusted with fulfilling designated security duties on board ship to increase the security and safety of the vessel whilst in port, or at sea. Studies have demonstrated that crewmembers with high-quality training are more proficient in both a stressful environment and during a security-related incident.

Awarding Body:

This online course is fully approved and certified under the UK Department for Transport Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Target Audience:

To give those undertaking designated security duties on board ship the essential education and training meeting the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following STCW table, which supports Chapter XI-2 of the annex to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, as amended and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

Course Qualification:

Regulation VI/6, paragraph 4 and Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 6 to 8 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and incorporates Proficiency in Security Awareness laid down in Regulation VI/6 and Section A-VI/6 of the STCW Convention and Code.

Pre-Requisites:

There is no intake restriction, although some sea going experience would be an advantage before undertaking a designated security duties course, and neither is there a requirement for the learner to have completed security awareness training before being enrolled on a designated security duties training course.

Regulations Addressed:

The International Ship & Port Security (ISPS) Code, STCW Table A-VI/6-2.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. The learner knows why ship security is important and knows the roles and responsibilities of the organisations and individuals involved.
  2. The learner knows what constitutes security risk, threat and vulnerability to the ship, its personnel, cargo and operations.
  3. The learner knows the capabilities and limitations of security methods, equipment and systems.
  4. The learner knows how to maintain the measures in a ship security plan and related requirements.
  5. The learner is able to maintain the effectiveness of security arrangements, procedures and equipment at the three security levels, taking into account their limitations.

  • 5 modules representing the introduction, the three learning outcomes, and the final assessment & course feedback.
  • Confirmation questions after each module.
  • Downloadable Course Manual.
  • A Final Official Course Assessment.

Online Assessment:

There are multi-choice on-screen learning confirmation questions to complete at the end of each section, and a final randomised test. This test may be taken as often as required and the pass mark is 70%.

Course Duration:

The course lasts for approximately 8 hours depending on the learner’s abilities and reading speed. However, you can enter and exit this course as often as you require.

The program contains text, still photographs, video clips and animations. The course is delivered 100% online with absolutely no requirement to attend a test centre.

Learners are required to complete a simple online verification form which links from the course, where they will submit a scan of an official photo ID such as a passport, Seaman’s Book, CoC or similar. This is a requirement under the UK DfT MCA. Learners employed by a company or on-board ship must have an invigilator (Master, SSO, Officer) complete the simple online official invigilator form and submit it prior to the learner taking the final assessment.
