MCA Approved (STCW ISPS) Proficiency in Security Awareness Course

The PSA Course is a mandatory minimum requirement for the security training of all shipboard personnel. The STCW Convention and Code as amended by the Manila amendments (2010) contains new requirements regarding security training. Anyone working on board, or frequenting a ship to which the ISPS Code applies must possess at a minimum, the Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) certification. This fully Online Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) Course provides the learner with the relevant Knowledge, Understanding & Proficiency (KUP) as per the requirements laid out by STCW.

About the Online PSA Course:

Hard-learned experience clearly demonstrates that maritime security is not simply a matter of luck, the risk to life, ships, passengers and crewmembers can be significantly reduced through the provision of knowledge, security awareness and understanding of the threats. By knowing what to look for, and most importantly, knowing how to deal with problems if they arise, the outcome can prove a favourable one.

Awarding Body:

This online course is fully approved and certified under the UK Department for Transport Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Target Audience:

The course is specifically designed for seafarers of all ranks, whom do not have designated security duties as detailed within the Ship Security Plan. The course is also a requirement under the ISPS for anyone frequenting a ship often such as stewards, cruise ship staff, entertainers, etc.

Course Qualification:

Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended.

Pre-Requisites:

There are no pre-requisites for attending this course.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • To provide a general introduction to maritime security and raise awareness of security issues when alongside, at anchor and out at sea.
  • To enable all seafarers to meet the minimum standard of competence in security awareness outlined in the ISPS Code and the STCW Convention Table A-VI/6-1 and the IMO Model Course 3.27.
  • To identify and report security threats

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. The learner is aware of the importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision.
  2. The learner is aware of the requirements and measures to maintain ship security.
  3. The learner is able to recognise and report a security threat.

Online Course Structure:

The course consists of:

  • 5 modules representing the introduction, the three learning outcomes, and the final assessment & course feedback.
  • Confirmation questions after each module
  • A Final Official Course Assessment

Online Assessment:

There are multi-choice on-screen learning confirmation questions to complete at the end of each section, and a final randomised test. This test may be taken as often as required and the pass mark is 60%.

Course Duration:

The course lasts for approximately 4 hours depending on the learner’s abilities and reading speed. However, you can enter and exit this course as often as you require.

Mode of Delivery:

This course is delivered using interactive Learning Management System (LMS). Students follow easy on-screen instructions to progress through the course. The program contains text, still photographs, video clips and animations. The course is delivered 100% online with absolutely no requirement to attend a test centre.

Online Verification Requirements:

Learners are required to complete a simple online verification form which links from the course, where they will submit a scan of an official photo ID such as a passport, Seaman’s Book, CoC or similar. This is a requirement under the UK DfT MCA.

Certification

Official PSA Course Certification:

The online PSA Course is fully approved by the UK Maritime & Coastguard and is internationally recognised and accepted.  It includes the 2010 Manila Amendments and conforms to Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and has also met the additional criteria specified in the STCW Convention and Code, applicable to the issue of this certificate.

Notification of Course Completion & Course Certificate:

You must notify us upon completing your course, including all requested paperwork. The official Certificate is emailed to you within 24 hours of us receiving and opening your email.
